With the Support of the British, the Lugansk Ukrainian Theater Successfully Performed in Poland

The actors of the Lugansk Regional Academic Ukrainian Drama Theater that evacuated to Severodonetsk were among the winners of the competition “Taking the Stage” of the British Council in Ukraine, which gave them the opportunity to take part in the international festival.

The “Eastern Partnership” informs that Lugansk actors became participants of the 4th International Festival of Ukrainian Theater “East-West”, which was held in the Polish city of Krakow.

The British Council in Ukraine supported the application of the Lugansk residents to stage the play of the English playwright Duncan Macmillan “Lungs” in Ukrainian.  A young actor and director, a graduate of the Lugansk State Academy of Culture and Arts Yevgeny Merzlyakov got down to it.

The Ukrainians were given a partner contribution to the production, defined mentors to work on it. A few days ago the theater became a participant of the international festival in Poland with this performance. Among the participants were troupes from Kiev, Kharkov, Lviv, Odessa, Zaporozhye, Sumy, Chernigov, Chernivtsi, Rivne, as well as Berlin, Tbilisi and Krakow itself.

Before the performance of the Lugansk residents in Krakow's “Theater Without Rows” director of the festival, Nadezhda Moroz-Olshanskaya noted the importance of creative ties between Ukraine and Poland.

“The motto of this festival is,” she said, “Through the thorns to the stars.” This way is demonstrated by the Lugansk Ukrainian Theater. It develops together with the European while saving its specificity and uniqueness.”

The performance ‘Lungs” became a bold experiment. With the expressive use of plastic means, he showed the depth of psychological relations in the family, tuned the audience to his emotional wave, and convinced that we should fight together for the love and for the future.
