«Everything May Suffer»: Donbas Militants Hide Information about Hazardous Substances on Chemical Concern

Militants try to hide the risks associated with storing chemicals at «Stirol» Concern that is situated in the occupied Donbas city.

The absence of thermal processes on satellite images of PJSC «Concern Stirol» (situated in occupied by militants Horlivka, the Donetsk region) indicates the preservation of the enterprise and, therefore, further storage of extremely hazardous substances on its territory. This is stated in a message posted by the Ministry of Temporarily Occupied Territories and IDPs of Ukraine.

It is noted that Horlivka «Stirol» remains one of the most dangerous enterprises, which is located in the occupied part of Donbas. Before the war, the company specialized in the production of ammonia, carbamide, ammonium nitrate, polystyrene, as well as inorganic salts and organic resins.

In 2013, a serious accident occurred at the plant: six people died, more than 20 people were injured. This case is recorded as one of the most dangerous in the chemical industry of Ukraine.

In the Ministry of Temporarily Occupied Territories and IDPs note that a large amount of ammonia is still preserved in the workshops of the enterprise for the production of sulfuric acid, mineral fertilizers, and nitric acid, which is very dangerous for the nearby settlements and their inhabitants.

«According to the Ministry information obtained from various sources, several tens of hazardous chemicals remained at the plant during 2018, at the beginning of 2018 some of them sometimes reached 80 tons of ammonia. We believe that if it is irresponsible to deal with such a substance, then practically the entire population of the city may suffer,» Vadym Chernysh, Minister for Temporarily Occupied Territories and IDPs said.

In the Ministry, they also state that all of Horlivka, including the surrounding settlements, as well as the city of Toretsk may be in the danger zone.

«Considering the information received by the Ministry from various sources, including from local residents, we will contact international organizations for access by their representatives or independent international experts to the company to ensure the safety of its condition and stored substances for the local population. Follow-up also includes an investigation. Now preparing to appeal to law enforcement agencies with a statement of factual information. We hope that the investigation will help us to establish what is happening there,» Chernysh noted.
