The Ukrainian military tragicomedy «Donbass» directed by Sergei Loznitsa did not get on the shortlist of nominees who will compete for Oscars in the «Best Foreign Language Film» nomination. A list of nine applicants was published on the website of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The following tapes were nominated:
- Colombia, «Birds of Passage»
- Denmark, «The Guilty»
- Germany, «Never Look Away»
- Japan, «Shoplifters»
- Kazakhstan, «Ayka»
- Lebanon, «Capernaum»
- Mexico, «Roma»
- Poland, «Cold War»
- South Korea, «Burning»
The final list of nominees will be announced by the Academy on January 22, 2019, and the award ceremony will take place on February 24 in Los Angeles.
The film consists of 13 intertwining plots, which demonstrate different spheres of life in the occupied territories. The tape shows how militants take away a car from a local businessman, immigrants huddle in the basement, an official steals property in a hospital and journalist shoot fake news for television.
The world premiere of the film took place on May 9 at the Cannes Film Festival.
