By 2100, 34 Ukrainian cities, including Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Mariupol, Berdyansk, and Kerch, may be flooded due to climate change. Also, 62 villages, 660 environmentally hazardous objects, 200 thousand hectares of agricultural land and 98 objects of the nature reserve fund can become completely flooded. 75 thousand people can become climate migrants. Such data was released by experts of the NGO «Ekodia» during a press briefing at the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center.
The authors of the study consider the effects that correspond to a 4 °C rise in temperature and, accordingly, a 1-meter rise in sea level. The participants of the briefing noted that joint active actions by all countries of the world to stop using fossil fuels and to switch to 100% renewable energy by 2050 could limit the rise of temperature in Earth within 1.5 — 2 °C and sea level rise will be three times lower than in case of warming to 4 °C.
An interactive map that demonstrates settlements, buildings, roads, environmentally hazardous objects and parts of the natural reserve fund that may be flooded by the Black and Azov seas by the end of the century, is available here. So, by the end of the century, not only the industrial areas of Mariupol could be under water, but the Belosarayska Kosa, Melekino, Urzuf.
