Half a Million Children Need Urgent Help in Donbas — UNICEF

Half a million children need urgent protection and humanitarian assistance in Donbas, including access to clean drinking water, a safe learning environment, quality health care, and psychosocial support.

UNICEF needs $ 21.1 million to help families and children affected by the military conflict in Donbas, the press service of UNICEF Ukraine reports.

Thus, as a result of the shelling of critical infrastructure, access to water is restricted to 3.2 million people living in the Donetsk region and Luhansk region. Last year, water supply facilities were shelled 89 times, and 9 workers were injured.

Also, children in the conflict zone in Donbas do not have the conditions for safe education — only last year 16 schools suffered from shelling, and another 50 were temporarily closed, restricting children's access to education.

The situation is especially acute for 400,000 children living in the 20-kilometer zone on both sides of the demarcation line, where hostilities take place and a large number of unexploded ordnance remains to endanger life.

UNICEF states that in Ukraine, it is necessary to provide for the needs of families and children living on the contact line in the Donbas, 21.1 million dollars. The organization will spend this money on providing humanitarian assistance to children, psychosocial assistance, mine safety, providing access to education and water, as well as maternal and child health.
