PHOTOS. "We Are Glad that We Can Help People Spend Winter in Warm Houses": International Donors Checked how Dwelling Is Restored in Donbas

A delegation of representatives of the Japanese Embassy and the UN Refugee Agency in Ukraine made a working visit to the village of Kurdiumivka of the Donetsk region and checked the state of housing renewal.

Last year, 325,000 dollars were allocated by the Government of Japan together with the Czech organization "People in Need" to restore and reconstruct the destroyed housing along the line of demarcation, reports NA "Vchasno".

For these funds, one and a half thousand houses were restored in the territory of the Donetsk region controlled by Ukrainian Government.

"Thanks a lot that you replaced our doors, windows because we had nothing there. Everything was broken. On February 6, 2017, at eight o'clock in the evening, the son sat at the laptop. When we heard the first explosion, rushed to the living room, because here is the safest place. He ran from the room, and behind him, everything was flying: glass, pieces of plaster. Sasha turned his back to the door and the shrapnel fell into the heart. The ambulance did not show up, and we still waited and waited, "said mother of a deceased teen Yuliya Novitskaya." From his injuries, my 15-year-old boy died on the spot."
Locals claim that since the beginning of 2015, shelling of militants took away the lives of five of their fellow villagers.

"December 31, 2015, shelling covered us. There were two bullets of hail, shells lay all along the road, many buildings were destroyed, - said 70-year-old resident of the village Valentina. - Yesterday also were a lot of shellings. There is a school in the village, there is no job, before the war there was a plant that produced acid-proof brick, but it is currently standing. We survive, because various organizations bring humanitarian aid, distribute food kits, bring wood, give money to buy coal."

In particular, thanks to donor assistance in Kurdiumivka, two houses were reconstructed, thirty-six - renovated.

"The Government of Japan, together with its partners, supports the peaceful residents of Donbas. There are so many families in need of assistance and we have to make a choice who should be helped first," said Shigeki Sumi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine, in a conversation with villagers. - Winter in Ukraine is very cold, we are glad that we can help people spend winter in warm houses."
