Volodymyr Yelchenko, the Head of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations, at a meeting of the UN Security Council, called for the introduction of new targeted sanctions against the Russian Federation in order to force it to comply with the Minsk Agreements.
Representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany, France, and other EU countries called the launched process a «global problem».
The European representatives stated that these regions, like the entire Donbas, are an integral part of the Ukrainian territory, therefore the «easier procedure for obtaining Russian citizenship» for Ukrainian citizens here is contrary to the goals and spirit of the Minsk treaties.
In turn, Russia's envoy to the UN Vasyl Nebenzya has traditionally accused Ukraine in a non-fulfillment of «Minsk», stating that Russia has nothing to do. According to him, Russia does not force anyone to receive their passports: «They themselves want it. We only provide such an opportunity».
At the same time, US post-deputy Jonathan Cohen called Putin's decree on a simplified procedure for Russian passports for сertain districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions a «provocation.»
Representatives of the countries made statements, but the UN Security Council did almost nothing: no constructive decision was made.
Recall, on April 24, Russian president Volodymyr Putin signed a decree that simplifies the receipt of Russian citizenship for residents of the so-called «DNR» and «LNR». The document was published on the Kremlin website. According to the decree, the application for the receipt of Russian citizenship, submitted by residents of unrecognized republics, should be considered within three months from the moment of filing.
